Streetcar No. 651 was operating during the atomic bombing in Hiroshima 79 years ago. It was derailed and damaged but returned to service by March 1946. The tram is now used occasionally and shows no damage from the bombing. Built in 1942, it retains many original parts.
The bogie truck is from prewar years and features technology advanced for its time. Repairs are challenging due to its analog nature. Hiroshima Electric Railway plans to keep the tram running as a symbol of the bombing, postwar reconstruction, and peace.
