Months after quitting China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Italy and China signed a three-year economic agreement on Sunday.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited China to reset the Italy-China economic relationship after leaving the BRI. The agreement includes an action plan to implement past agreements and try new forms of cooperation.
Meloni said, “We certainly have a lot of work to do. I am convinced this work can be useful on a global level and important at a multilateral level.” She said this at the start of a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, according to The Associated Press.
Meloni’s visit to China comes during a trade conflict between China, the United States, and the European Union (EU) over electric vehicles (EV), renewable energy goods, and metals.
