The Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested two men from Assam’s Tinsukia district on July 5 for ULFA-related extortion in Namsai district.
The arrests happened in Marwa, Chongkham circle. The suspects, Chanchal Moran (a surrendered ULFA member) and Nirmal Moran, demanded ₹15 lakh from a local shopkeeper.
They were caught trying to flee after extorting ₹95,500 as an advance payment. Police seized ₹95,500, two dummy AK rifles, a 9 mm pistol, three mobile phones, and a motorbike.
The arrests were a coordinated effort involving Namsai Police, Wakro Police Station, and the 11 Assam Rifles, Namsai. Key officers included Inspector J. Aran, SI A Chandra, SSP Lohit Tumme Amo, and SP Namsai S Thinley.
The incident started with an FIR filed on July 3 by a shopkeeper. She reported that on May 31, three armed men demanded ₹15 lakh in ransom and threatened her.
Wakro Police registered the case under the Arms Act 1959. The investigation revealed the duo’s plan to collect the ransom, leading to their capture.
This incident highlights ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities linked to militant groups in the region.
