French PM Attal to resign, after Macron’s coalition loses majority

July 08, 2024
France’s Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said he would resign on Monday. His coalition failed to win a majority in parliamentary elections on Sunday, July 7. He said he would stay in office if his resignation is refused, especially with the Paris Olympics starting in three weeks.
Attal said he would resign the next morning, following republican tradition. The Elysée Palace said Macron will wait until the new Assemblée is structured before making decisions. This means Attal could stay in office for some time.
Macron’s coalition was expected to win between 150 and 170 seats, down from 250 in the previous legislature. They were overtaken by the Nouveau Front Populaire left-wing alliance but remained ahead of the far-right Rassemblement National.
